Raw Ramones, on the road
and at the zoo

Ramones
Raw (Image Entertainment)

Hotel lobbies. Trips to the zoo.  Headphones in the
back of a van. It sounds like every terrible vacation you
ever took with your parents.  So why would anyone
want to watch that? Well, when it’s Joey Ramone in
that same van, which currently happens to be
hounded by Brazilian punk fans, it makes for a slightly
more interesting viewing experience.

Cobbled together from performances and Marky
Ramone’s home videos,
Raw is an intriguing and
hilarious look at the Ramones, the hardest working
band in the history of rock. Filled with several
memorable moments, including (but not limited to)
Drew Barrymore fawning over the band, Dee Dee’s
rap career, and a bizarre appearance on Mario
Cantone’s long-cancelled kids’ show
Steampipe
Alley
, the Ramones present their life on the road,
complete with broken-down vans, airline gags and
bathroom breaks.
And while the home videos are entertaining enough, what really makes this DVD worth the price of admission
are the live clips. Scenes from a 1980 concert in Italy (shown in its entirety as a bonus program on the disc),
mixed with shows from the late 1980s with both Dee Dee and CJ on bass prove what most Ramones fanatics
already knew – that no band worked harder for longer, and that their shows were just as bombastic and
blistering in 1996 as they were in 1976.

There are dozens of extras on the DVD as well, including the Italy show, deleted scenes, complete TV clips
(check out Gilbert Gottfried as “the 5th Ramone”) and 12 Easter eggs that are admittedly more fun to look for
than actually watch.

Throw everything together, and it’s an awesome little package, a dream addition to any Ramones fan’s
collection, and enough to make even the novice jump up and shout
“R-A-M-O-N-E-S, R-A-M-O-N-E-S Ramones!”
